TWI is one of the EU’s foremost independent RTOs. Over 500 skilled staff provides industry with engineering solutions in joining, and associated technologies, for a wide range of engineering materials (metals, plastics, ceramics, composites and electronic assemblies). Some 3500 member companies and organisations, representing virtually all sectors of manufacturing industry from over 60 countries around the world, benefit from TWI services. Well over half of TWI’s activities involve specific contract research, funded by industry and built around the development of advanced technologies for manufacturing needs.
TWI is an active participant in collaborative research programmes in the UK, in Europe and internationally, and has accrued significant project coordination and management experience. TWI has been involved in the development of laser materials processing technologies, including welding, for nearly fifty years, and in that time has published over 120 key open reports for its industrial members, and output a significantly higher number of confidential reports, papers and presentation material. Over this period TWI’s work in this area for its clients has included state-of-the-art reviews, fundamental studies, development of laser welding procedures, characterisation of weld qualities and properties to international standards, impartial support to laser equipment specification and liaison with suppliers on behalf of clients, on- and off-site consultancy, troubleshooting, training and technology transfer support services.
